UFA

UFA
You can find out more about the founding of “Universum-Filmaktiengesellschaft” (Ufa) in 1917 and the rise to one of the leading film groups in Europe in Chapter 9 of the book 100 FACTS ABOUT BABELSBERG.
In addition to groundbreaking productions in the 1920s-40s and Ufa contributions to the development of film art and film technology, the founding of the Ufa Lehrschau (chapter 25 of the book) and the German Film Academy in „Babelsberg Ufastadt“ (chapter 26 of the book) are important to be mentioned.
After World War II. and the division of Germany, DEFA was founded in the eastern half of Germany and was located mainly in Babelsberg. Ufa moved to West Germany. In 1956 Bavaria-Film was spun off and the rest of Ufa was reprivatised. A banking consortium led by Deutsche Bank was behind the re-establishment of Ufa.
In 1964, the Bertelsmann Group acquired Ufa, while the film rights to the Ufa and Bavaria films that had been produced up to that point were given to the Wiesbaden-based Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation in 1966, which manages, stores, restores and provides
the productions to the public.

The headquarter of today’s UFA is located in the Babelsberg Media City since 1996. This means that the largest media company in Germany is part of the “UNESCO Creative City of Film Potsdam”.
With its three units, UFA is represented in several cities and produces almost all of today’s popular tv formats: from successful soap operas and telenovelas to well-known television series, feature films and movies to quiz programs and Saturday evening shows.
